South Korean enterprises that quit LCD did not quit the panel field. On the contrary, they opened up their territory in the field of new generation display technology: for example, Samsung is strong in small-size OLEDs, accounting for more than 80% of the market share; and LG is also leading in the field of big size white light OLEDs.

3.1 MLED

MLED, including micro led and mini led, both are based on LED display technology. LED is very common, such as street lights, billboards, etc., but MLED is operated at the micro level, the difficulty is greatly increased. MLED means transfer the traditional LED design structure into microminiaturized, and arrayed these tiny chips into display pixels, which can be driven and controlled by a single driver. In this way, to achieve high brightness, low energy consumption, high resolution and high saturation display effect.

In 2012, Sony released a 55 inch display, using 6.22 million micro leds to create high-resolution display pixels, this could regards as a first formal appearance of Micro LED. But now is still in the incubation stage of Micro LED. Because this technology remove sapphire substrate, is not easy to transfer, and the number of chips per unit area has increased by three or four times, which makes it easy to form false soldering and has more fragile protection, so the cost and difficulty are greatly increased.

In order to balance technology, effect and business, mini led technology came into being. It also uses LED display, but its design size is two or three times larger than that of micro. The chip size is 100-200 μ m, and the sapphire substrate is retained. Therefore, the process difficulty and production cost are greatly reduced. It can achieve better effect than traditional LED, and its service life is longer than OLED.

Due to power consumption, size and other reasons, mini led is not suitable for wearable devices, but it is very good for large and medium-sized fields such as vehicle control.

Next week, we will talk about OLED.
